A Foundation of Faith

Karen Marie Lopez was born on December 4, 1954, and from her earliest days, her life was built upon a foundation of deep faith. Raised in the Catholic tradition, she had a profound reverence for prayer that went beyond habit; it was the core of her being. Her devotion was so strong that she once felt a calling to dedicate her life to God as a nun.

Although her own devout mother gently guided her away from that path, Karen's personal relationship with her Heavenly Father only deepened. She remained a woman of steadfast prayer, offering daily devotions each morning and night, faithfully praying for her future husband long before she ever knew his name.

An Answered Prayer

For Karen, the path to marriage was not straightforward. After a broken engagement that left her heart shattered, her father expressed his loving concern that she might never marry. Karen, with a heavy heart, began to accept the prospect of a life alone. But she never abandoned her hope or her prayers. Years later, a casual acquaintance in California would become the answer to those decades of faithful prayers.

After a prompting he couldn't ignore, I returned to California to pursue a relationship with her. When I proposed to her in Virginia, it was the culmination of a hope she had held onto against all odds. Her years of prayer had been answered in a way she had always believed was possible.

A Test of Faith

Our marriage was a blessing of twenty faith-filled years, made even richer by the birth of our two children. Then, in October 2006, our faith was met with its greatest trial. Karen was diagnosed with a severe liver disease. Our family embarked on a difficult journey, moving from hospital to hospital, praying fervently for a miracle and a place on a transplant list.

We clung to our faith, but the miracle we prayed for was not to be. Doctors gave her a life expectancy of about five years. In a poignant and heartbreaking twist of fate, Karen passed away exactly five years later, on our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a test of faith that asked everything of us.

A Legacy of Love

The grief following Karen's passing was overwhelming. The loneliness was a constant weight, and feelings of guilt and sorrow were daily companions. Yet, the love she planted in our hearts continued to grow. Her legacy is not one of sorrow, but of unwavering faith, resilience, and the profound belief that prayers are heard. Her story didn't end with her passing; it simply changed form.

It is a legacy carried on by her two children, and in the unexpected and blessed second chapter that God would later write, proving that His love and plans for us extend beyond our deepest pains. Karen's life teaches us that from a foundation of faith, we can endure the greatest tests, and her legacy is a love that endures forever.
